As the synopsis suggests, Fletcher Reede is a successful lawyer who constantly lies to win cases and get ahead in life. He has recently separated from his wife Audrey (played by Maura Tierney) and is struggling to maintain a good relationship with his son Max (played by Justin Cooper).
On Max's fifth birthday, Fletcher promises to take him to a baseball game but ends up being late due to work commitments. This disappoints Max, who then makes a wish that his father would have to tell the truth for 24 hours. To Fletcher's surprise, the wish comes true, and he becomes physically unable to tell a lie.
This leads to several humorous and embarrassing situations for Fletcher as he tries to navigate his way through life without lying. He has to deal with his boss, ex-wife, and various clients who are not used to him being truthful. Meanwhile, Max is thrilled that his wish has come true, and he gets to spend more quality time with his dad.
Throughout the movie, Fletcher learns valuable lessons about the importance of honesty, integrity, and being true to oneself. He also realizes that his constant lying has not only affected his personal relationships but also his professional career.
