Lethal Weapon 2 is a 1989 American buddy cop action film directed by Richard Donner and starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, respectively. The film is a sequel to the 1987 hit movie Lethal Weapon and follows the story of two LAPD detectives as they investigate a South African smuggling ring.
The film opens with an explosive car chase scene, with Riggs and Murtaugh in hot pursuit of a truck loaded with illegally smuggled foreign currency. The chase ends with the truck exploding, leaving behind a trunk full of South African Krugerrands.
As they follow the trail of the smugglers, Riggs and Murtaugh discover that a South African diplomat named Arjen Rudd (Joss Ackland) is using his diplomatic immunity to cover up his illegal operations.
After a failed attempt to arrest Rudd, the detectives decide to take matters into their own hands and pursue him outside the jurisdiction of the LAPD. Their investigation leads them to a confrontation with some of Rudd's henchmen, and an explosive shootout in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
As tensions between the detectives and the diplomats escalate, Rudd plants a bomb underneath Murtaugh's toilet, which nearly kills him. This final act pushes Riggs and Murtaugh to seek revenge against Rudd and his associates, resulting in a thrilling and action-packed finale.
Lethal Weapon 2 was a commercial success, grossing over $227 million worldwide and receiving critical acclaim for its action sequences and the chemistry between its two leads. It also helped establish the buddy cop genre as a staple of Hollywood cinema.
