Alain Lefevre is a talented boxer who lives and fights in Marseille, France. He becomes indebted to a powerful local mobster named Lucien Galgani, who offers to cancel his debt in exchange for taking a dive in a high-stakes fight. Alain agrees, but ends up winning the bout against Galgani's favored opponent.
Afraid for his life, Alain decides to flee Marseille and take Galgani's girlfriend, Katrina, with him. They plan to travel to America where Alain can start a new life and leave his troubled past behind. However, Galgani sends his men after them, and they are forced to flee into the countryside.
With nowhere else to turn, Alain decides to join the French Foreign Legion, where he hopes to find protection and redemption. He meets a colorful group of soldiers from different parts of the world, including the tough Scottish soldier Mackintosh, the Bronx-born Rosetti, and the educated Englishman Luther.
However, life in the Legion proves to be far more challenging than Alain anticipated. The soldiers are subjected to brutal training, harsh discipline, and constant danger. Alain finds himself struggling to adapt to the harsh conditions and the strict hierarchy of the Legion.
Things become even more complicated when Alain crosses paths with Lieutenant Steinkampf, a cruel and abusive officer who takes pleasure in tormenting his men. Alain and his fellow Legionnaires must navigate the dangerous landscape of military life while facing constant pressure from Galgani, who is determined to track them down and exact revenge.
Alain finds himself caught between conflicting loyalties, torn between his desire for freedom and a sense of duty to his new comrades in the Legion. In the end, he must make a choice that will determine his fate and the fate of those around him.
