The movie Legend of the Demon Cat is a Chinese-Japanese co-production directed by renowned filmmaker Chen Kaige. It is based on the novel "Samana Kukai" by Japanese author Baku Yumemakura.
The film is set during the Late Tang Dynasty, a period of political and social upheaval in China. The manor that is invaded by the demon cat belongs to Yang Guifei, the beloved concubine of Emperor Xuanzong. The demon cat is believed to be the reincarnation of Yang Guifei's pet cat, who died during her tragic downfall. Legend has it that the demon cat seeks revenge for her mistress's death.
The poet in charge of investigating the case is Bai Letian, a famous writer and former court official who has fallen out of favor with the emperor. He is joined by the monk Kukai, who has come from Japan to study Buddhism in China. The two men have very different approaches to the case, but they eventually become friends and allies.
As Bai and Kukai investigate the demon cat's activities, they uncover a web of secrets and conspiracies involving the imperial court and the powerful eunuchs who control it. They also discover that the demon cat is not the only dangerous creature roaming the capital of Changan.
The film is a visually stunning epic that blends fantasy, history, and mystery. It features an impressive cast that includes Huang Xuan as Bai Letian, Shota Sometani as Kukai, and Kitty Zhang Yuqi as Yang Guifei. The film's score is composed by renowned musician Joe Hisaishi, and the special effects are by the team that worked on Hollywood blockbuster Avatar.
