Wendy, a book-critic and writer living in Manhattan, is struggling to come to terms with her husband's infidelity and the end of their marriage. As she navigates her new life, she decides to learn how to drive, something she has never done before. She enlists the help of Darwan, a Sikh driving instructor with his own marriage troubles and a deep love for poetry.
As Wendy and Darwan spend time together in the car, they begin to confide in each other. Wendy shares her feelings of betrayal and confusion while Darwan recounts his own experiences with arranged marriage and cultural clashes. Throughout their lessons, Wendy learns to assert herself and find her independence, while Darwan finds the strength to stand up for himself and his beliefs.
As Wendy's driving skills improve, so does their friendship. However, when Darwan's own marriage is threatened, Wendy realizes that she too has a role to play in his life.
