In the movie Le Havre, Marcel Marx is portrayed as a compassionate man, who has taken it upon himself to look out for the other immigrants in his area. Marcel's world is turned upside down when his wife Arletty falls seriously ill, and he must find a way to take care of her. One day, he comes across an underage illegal immigrant named Idrissa, who has sneaked into France from Gabon to be with his mother in London. Idrissa has escaped police custody, and Marcel feels compelled to help him. With the help of his friends and community, Marcel hides Idrissa from the police, even as they launch a manhunt to track him down.
As Marcel's relationship with Idrissa deepens, he realizes that the young boy is also a victim of the harsh realities of the world, and to send him back to Africa would be a cruel fate. Marcel takes it upon himself to help Idrissa reach his destination of London, where his mother is waiting for him. Through twists and turns, Marcel manages to outwit the police and bring Idrissa to London, fulfilling his promise of reuniting him with his mother.
