Lars, played by Ryan Gosling, lives in a small town and works in an office. He is extremely shy and introverted, and it is evident that he struggles with social interactions and feelings of loneliness.
One day, Lars introduces his family to his new girlfriend, Bianca. They are initially shocked and confused when they discover that Bianca is a life-size doll that Lars ordered off the Internet. However, they soon learn that Lars believes that Bianca is a real person, and he has developed a meaningful relationship with her.
To help Lars cope with his delusion, his brother and sister-in-law encourage the rest of the town to treat Bianca as if she is a real person. They go along with Lars' beliefs, and Bianca is welcomed into the community with open arms. She attends church, participates in community events, and even takes a job as a volunteer at a hospital.
Through his relationship with Bianca, Lars begins to open up and communicate with others. He starts attending parties and social events with Bianca, and eventually starts to form real, meaningful relationships with other people.
Throughout the film, the community comes together to support Lars and his relationship with Bianca. They help him understand and overcome his feelings of loneliness and isolation, and ultimately accept and love him for who he is.
