Larry Crowne, played by Tom Hanks, is a middle-aged Navy veteran who loses his job at a big-box store due to lack of college education. He attends East Valley Community College to better his job prospects and meets a diverse group of students, including a group of scooter riders led by Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who inspire him to buy a scooter of his own.
Larry's speech class is taught by Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), a bitter and cynical teacher who is struggling with a failing marriage and a drinking problem. Despite the initial tension between them, Larry and Mercedes eventually form a close friendship.
As Larry gets more involved in campus life, he joins the college's speech and debate team and becomes a mentor to Talia. He also starts working at a local diner, owned by Frank (Cedric the Entertainer), and develops a romantic interest in one of his co-workers, the free-spirited and artistic Alexa (Wilmer Valderrama).
However, Larry's newfound happiness is threatened when he is denied financial aid and has to drop out of school. With the help of his new friends, Larry is able to come up with a plan to save his job, finish his degree, and pursue a relationship with Alexa.
Larry Crowne is a heartwarming and uplifting film about second chances, friendships, and reinventing oneself in middle age.
