Lapwing

Drama,Thriller  United Kingdom

Lapwing is a stark and suspenseful drama set in the year 1555 in rural England. The film centers on the mute young woman Patience, who lives in an isolated community with her controlling brother-in-law and leader, David. David is a man who believes that he is the chosen one, set aside by God to lead his community into a better way of life. However, his idyllic vision has failed, and his grip on his followers is slipping.

In this challenging environment, the Egyptian Act has been passed. This law stipulates that all 'gypsies' must leave England immediately, and anyone found aiding them could face execution. Against this backdrop, David agrees to offer a group of Egyptian travelers shelter on his land for a fee. The Egyptians must stay there for a month until a ship arrives to take them away.

Patience is a curious and rebellious character who is intrigued by the outsiders. She becomes romantically involved with one of the Egyptian travelers, and this sets off a dangerous chain of events. David discovers the affair and becomes enraged, feverishly plotting his revenge against Patience and the Egyptian family.

The film is tense and atmospheric, with stunning cinematography that captures the rugged beauty of the English countryside. It explores themes of power, suppression, and rebellion in a compelling and gripping way. Lapwing is a powerful and thought-provoking drama that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
