The film is set in the 19th century and tells the story of Jenny Blake, the owner of a gambling boat that operates on the Mississippi River. Despite her success, Jenny longs to escape her current way of life and become part of high society.

Jenny meets Alan Alderson, a wealthy society gentleman, and they begin to fall in love. Alan is enchanted by Jenny's beauty and spirit, and she, in turn, is drawn to his kindness and generous nature. However, their romance is threatened when Jack Morgan, Jenny's former lover and partner in the gambling boat operation, reappears in her life.

Jenny must choose between Jack and Alan, and she ultimately decides to marry Alan and leave her old life behind. However, her past comes back to haunt her when a rival boat operator, who has long been jealous of Jenny's success, tries to sabotage her operation. Jack comes to Jenny's aid, risking his life to save her and the boat.

In the end, Jenny and Alan are able to reconcile and start their new life together. Lady for a Night explores themes of class, romance, and the struggle to leave behind the past and embrace a new future.
