The main character, Sing, is at first portrayed as a low-level criminal who wants nothing more than to join the notorious Axe Gang and make a name for himself. However, he soon finds himself caught up in a power struggle between the slumlords of Pig Sty Alley and the Axe Gang, who are determined to take over the area and eliminate anyone who opposes them.
As Sing tries to prove himself to the Axe Gang, he inadvertently attracts the attention of the slumlords, who initially dismiss him as a bumbling amateur. However, when the Axe Gang launches a brutal assault on Pig Sty Alley, Sing discovers that the slumlords are actually highly skilled martial artists who have been hiding their true identities in order to live in peace.
Determined to protect his new friends and prove his worth as a kung fu master, Sing joins forces with the slumlords to take on the Axe Gang in an epic battle that will determine the fate of the entire town. Along the way, Sing learns important lessons about loyalty, bravery, and the true nature of power.
Other notable characters in the film include the Axe Gang leader, Brother Sum, who is ruthless and power-hungry; the three cruel but incompetent Harpists, who serve as Brother Sum's henchmen; and the slumlords themselves, who include the chain-smoking Landlady, the beer-swilling Tailor, and the kung-fu master known as The Beast.
