The movie takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1934 during the Great Depression. After Kit's father loses his business and leaves town to find work, Kit and her mother take in boarders to make ends meet. One of their boarders is a mobile librarian named Miss Bond who encourages Kit's love of writing and helps her with her journalism.
Kit's world is turned upside down when her beloved teacher, Miss May Dooley, loses her job due to budget cuts. Kit and her classmates hold a protest by refusing to attend class until Miss Dooley is reinstated. The protest gains national attention and brings attention to the struggles of the Great Depression.
Meanwhile, Kit befriends a young hobo named Will who is falsely accused of stealing her mother's lockbox. Kit sets out to prove his innocence and uncovers a larger conspiracy involving one of their boarders. With the help of her friends, and her writing skills, Kit exposes the real thief and restores justice.
The film tackles themes of family, friendship, perseverance, and empathy during a tumultuous time in American history. It also celebrates the importance of storytelling and the power of journalism to bring about change.
