Kissufim

Drama  Israel

"Kissufim" is a heartfelt coming of age story that follows a group of young soldiers in a Nahal group (a unit combining military service with agricultural work) volunteering in the kibbutz named "Kissufim" during the late 1970s, on the outskirts of the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip.

The film delves into the lives of these soldiers as they navigate the challenges and complexities of leaving their adolescent years behind and transitioning into adulthood. Each character in the group faces their own personal struggles and journeys, which ultimately shape their understanding of love, sexuality, morality, and responsibility.

One of the main characters, Aviram, has recently lost his father and is searching for guidance and purpose in life. As he immerses himself in the agricultural work of the kibbutz, he learns the value of hard work, builds friendships, and starts discovering his own identity. Aviram's storyline intertwines with his growing feelings for Tamar, a young woman from the neighboring kibbutz who is passionate about her work and is struggling to break free from societal gender roles.

Another soldier, Eyal, is dealing with the weight of his responsibilities as he faces the end of his military service. Eyal finds solace and strength in the arms of Batya, a fellow volunteer, as together they explore their own desires and confront the societal expectations placed upon them.

Meanwhile, Shimi, a carefree and rebellious soldier, explores his own sexuality and experiences a complicated relationship with Shlomi, a local Palestinian whose life circumstances have brought them together despite the tensions between their communities.

As the soldiers fulfill their duties on the kibbutz and forge relationships with locals and fellow volunteers, they are exposed to the harsh realities of the situation in the Gaza Strip. This exposure challenges their preconceived notions about the world, influencing their beliefs, and forcing them to confront their own sense of right and wrong.

Throughout their time in Kissufim, the group of soldiers must grapple with the complexities of love, sexuality, morality, and responsibility, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on their lives and shaping their views as they transition into civilian adulthood. The film captures the essence of a pivotal stage in these characters' lives, highlighting the universal experiences of growth, self-discovery, and the challenges of navigating the world beyond adolescence.
