Kiss of the Spider Woman is a 1985 drama film directed by Hector Babenco and produced by David Weisman. Based on the novel of the same name by Manuel Puig, the film depicts the lives of two prisoners in a South American prison during the political turmoil of the 1970s.
The protagonist of the story is Luis Molina, played by William Hurt, a gay man who is serving time for "corrupting a minor". Despite their different backgrounds and orientations, Luis and Valentin find common ground in their desire for freedom and personal dignity. Their relationship becomes more complicated when they are visited by the Warden's malevolent secretary, who tries to extract information from Valentin for his own political aims. Luis intervenes to protect his friend and pays a heavy price for his loyalty.
The film climaxes with a powerful allegorical scene where Luis imagines himself as the Spider Woman, a mysterious and seductive figure who weaves her web to entrap her victims. The metaphorical imagery suggests the ways in which oppressive systems use fear, guilt, and shame to control and manipulate individuals.
