Kingdom of Heaven is a 2005 historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, and Liam Neeson. The story is set in the 12th century and follows the journey of a young blacksmith named Balian (Orlando Bloom), who reluctantly becomes a leader and warrior in the midst of the Crusades after his wife commits suicide.
Balian meets his estranged father, Baron Godfrey of Ibelin (Liam Neeson), a nobleman and Crusader, who invites him to travel with him to the Holy Land. In Jerusalem, Balian encounters a city torn apart by religious conflict, ruled by the Christian Crusaders but also inhabited by Muslims and Jews. He struggles to come to terms with his new role as a leader and the violence and bloodshed that surrounds him.
As Balian navigates the political intrigue of Jerusalem, he develops an unlikely romance with a Muslim princess named Sibylla (Eva Green), who is married to the unstable and cruel King Baldwin IV (Edward Norton), who is suffering from leprosy. Meanwhile, Balian also clashes with Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas), a hot-headed and ambitious knight who seeks to become King of Jerusalem and incites conflict with the Muslims.
As tensions escalate, Balian must defend Jerusalem against the Muslim leader Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), who leads a massive army to recapture the city. The film culminates in a bloody battle between the Christian defenders of Jerusalem, led by Balian, and the Muslim army, led by Saladin, resulting in a fragile peace settlement.
Kingdom of Heaven is a sprawling and epic film that explores themes of love, loss, faith, and political power, set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of the Middle East.
