Breaking Chains: Unleashing Hidden Voices

Drama  China

The movie King of the Children is a drama film directed by Chen Kaige that was released in 1987. It is based on a novel by Ah Cheng, which was published in 1983. The movie is set during the Cultural Revolution in China, a time when education was heavily controlled by the government and the curriculum was primarily focused on Maoist ideology.

The protagonist of the movie is an unschooled young man named Wang Qiangui, who is played by Chen Shaohua. Wang Qiangui is working as a labourer in the countryside when he is suddenly assigned to teach at a nearby village school. Initially, he struggles with the task, as he has never received a formal education and is not familiar with the Maoist textbooks that he is supposed to teach.

However, as Wang Qiangui spends more time with his students, he starts to realize the limitations of the Maoist education system. He begins to encourage his students to write about their own lives and feelings, rather than memorizing Maoist propaganda. This approach not only improves his students' literacy but also helps them to develop critical thinking skills.

At the same time, Wang Qiangui has a series of dream-like meetings with a young cowherd, played by Xie Tian. Through their interactions, he begins to understand that there is more to life than just education and that there are other ways to find fulfillment and happiness.

As Wang Qiangui continues to challenge the Maoist education system, he faces opposition from the local authorities. However, he persists in his efforts to inspire his students, and his unconventional teaching methods start to gain recognition.

The movie is a powerful commentary on the limitations of education under authoritarian regimes and the importance of individual creativity and freedom of expression. It also highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity of individuals to challenge oppressive systems and inspire change.
