Abby is a young woman who has never been close to her grandmother, who lived in a secluded house on the outskirts of town. When her grandmother passes away, she is surprised to inherit just one item- a brightly colored kite. Without much fanfare, Abby hands the kite over to her brother, a talented kite-surfer who is always on the lookout for new equipment.
But after her brother's sudden death, Abby starts to wonder if the kite had anything to do with it. She finds out that her brother was not the first victim of this killer kite- others have died under mysterious circumstances, all after flying the very same kite.
Abby begins to investigate, and she soon finds out that her grandmother was involved in a cult that worshiped the wind, which they believed carried the souls of the dead. They would craft kites as a way to harness and control the wind. But there was always the danger that they might accidentally trap a violent or malevolent spirit within a kite.
As Abby uncovers the secrets of the cult, she realizes that the only way to stop the kite is to confront the vengeful spirit within it. The climax of the movie takes place on a windswept beach, as Abby flies the kite one last time, luring the spirit out and trapping it within a special kite crafted by her grandmother. In the end, Abby and her family find closure, and she walks away from the experience with a newfound respect for the power of the wind.
