Kill Your Darlings is a 2013 biographical drama film that tells the story of the murder of David Kammerer, a former lover of famous beat poet, Lucien Carr. The film centers around the lives of several prominent members of the Beat Generation in the early years of their friendship.
Allen Ginsberg, a young and aspiring poet, arrives at Columbia University in 1944 where he meets the magnetic Lucien Carr. Carr introduces him to Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and other members of their circle of friends. The group experiments with drugs, art, and new forms of literature, breaking free from traditional norms and paving the way for the counterculture of the 1960s.
As the story unfolds, we learn that Carr has been pursued by Kammerer, his former mentor, and lover. Carr invites Ginsberg to meet Kammerer one night, and it is then that Kammerer's obsession with Carr becomes clearer. Later that evening, Kammerer is found dead in the Hudson River, and Carr confesses to stabbing him.
The film explores the consequences of the murder and its impact on each of the characters, especially Ginsberg who struggles with his own sexuality and creativity. Throughout the movie, we witness the birth of a literary movement that would change America forever.
