Key Largo is a 1948 film noir directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, and Lionel Barrymore. The film is based on a play by Maxwell Anderson and was adapted for the screen by Richard Brooks and Huston.
The story takes place in the aftermath of World War II, as Frank McCloud (Bogart) travels to Key Largo to pay his respects to the family of a fallen soldier. He meets Nora Temple (Bacall) and her father-in-law James Temple (Barrymore), who run a hotel that is shut down due to a hurricane. While there, they encounter Johnny Rocco (Robinson), a notorious gangster who is holed up at the hotel with his henchmen.
Rocco, who is awaiting transport to Cuba, takes the Temples and McCloud hostage. Throughout the film, tensions rise as Rocco taunts the hostages and McCloud tries to protect them. There are several subplots, including Rocco's violent past and his relationship with his alcoholic girlfriend, Gaye (played by Claire Trevor, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role).
The film's climax features a tense shootout between Rocco and McCloud, as well as a dramatic hurricane sequence. Key Largo is considered a classic of the film noir genre and features some of the most memorable performances by its cast.
