Terry Griffith, a high school student, dreams of becoming a journalist and winning a prestigious writing competition. However, when she discovers that the judges are biased against female writers, she decides to pose as a boy and submit her article again. Terry enlists the help of her younger brother, Buddy, to transform her appearance and mannerisms.
At her new school, Terry, now known as "Terry Jr.," becomes friends with a group of guys, including Rick, the class hunk. As Terry spends more time with Rick, she begins to develop feelings for him, but is unable to reveal her true identity.
Meanwhile, Terry's best friend, Denise, becomes suspicious of Terry's absence and decides to investigate. With the help of other female students at the school, Denise uncovers Terry's secret and confronts her. Terry decides to reveal her true identity to Rick, who is shocked but ultimately accepts her for who she is.
