David Abbott (played by Mark Ruffalo) is a successful young man who rents a beautiful San Francisco apartment. One day, he comes back to find that a young woman named Elizabeth Martinson (played by Reese Witherspoon) has moved into his apartment and claims that it is hers. After some investigation, David discovers that Elizabeth was the previous tenant before she was in an accident and went into a coma.
David begins to see Elizabeth's ghostly presence in the apartment, and Elizabeth, who wakes up from her coma, can't understand why David is in her apartment. David seeks the help of a psychic named Darryl (played by Jon Heder), who tells him that Elizabeth's soul is trapped in her apartment and needs his help to move on.
As David and Elizabeth try to figure out what's happening, they start to develop feelings for each other. But if Elizabeth's soul doesn't move on soon, she'll be lost forever.
