Holly Davis (Mary Tyler Moore) is a recent widow who moves to San Diego with her teenage son following her husband's death. Sandy Dunlap (Christine Lahti) is a news anchor who recently moved to town with her husband, Bill (Sam Waterston). The two women meet at a fitness class and quickly become friends.
As their friendship grows, Holly confides in Sandy about her husband's death and the financial struggles she is facing. Sandy, in turn, shares her own marital issues with Holly, including her husband's infidelity.
