Jumping the Broom is a romantic comedy-drama film about two African American families from different socio-economic backgrounds who come together for a wedding. Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) is a successful lawyer from a wealthy family, while Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso) is a regular guy from a working-class family. They meet and fall in love in New York City, and decide to get married on Martha's Vineyard, the exclusive resort island off the coast of Massachusetts.
Sabrina's mother, Claudine (Angela Bassett), is a domineering and judgmental woman who is not pleased with her daughter's choice of husband. Jason's mother, Pam (Loretta Devine), is a feisty and opinionated woman who is protective of her son and his family. As the two families arrive on the island, they clash over their differences, causing tension and arguments.
As the wedding preparations get underway, the families try to find common ground and come to terms with their past and present issues. Sabrina's father, Greg (Brian Stokes Mitchell), tries to smooth things over by offering a generous gift to Jason's family. However, this causes more conflict when Pam reveals a long-held family secret.
As the wedding day approaches, Sabrina and Jason must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome the challenges and differences between their families. Jumping the Broom explores themes of class, tradition, and family dynamics, while also celebrating love, community, and resilience.
