The scientist, named Trevor Anderson, is a professor of geology who has been raising his teenage nephew, Sean, since the untimely death of Sean's father (Trevor's brother). When Sean visits Trevor during his summer break from school, Trevor becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to his missing brother, who was also a geologist.
Using his brother's research and clues, Trevor takes Sean and a local mountain guide named Hannah on a journey to Iceland, where they enter a volcanic cave. As they descend deeper into the earth, they encounter various obstacles, including prehistoric creatures, underground seas, and dangerous geologic phenomena.
Along the way, Trevor and Sean reconcile their strained relationship and bond over their shared love of science. They also discover that Trevor's brother had stumbled upon a lost world within the earth, where exotic plants and animals have thrived for millions of years without human interference.
However, as they approach the center of the earth, they face their greatest challenge: a massive crystal mountain that threatens to trap them forever. Using their scientific knowledge and resourcefulness, Trevor and Sean manage to escape and make it back to the surface, where they share their incredible journey with the world.
