Dreams of Many Colors: Joseph's Story of Betrayal and Redemption

Music,Family,Animation  United States of America

Joseph: King of Dreams is a 2000 American animated musical drama film and a prequel to the 1998 film The Prince of Egypt. The movie tells the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis, who was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers but rises to become a powerful ruler in Egypt.

The film opens with Joseph as a young boy, showing off his coat of many colors to his brothers. His brothers, already envious of their father Jacob's favoritism towards Joseph, become even more jealous after Joseph reveals his gift of dream interpretation. They eventually plot to sell Joseph to a band of passing merchants, telling their father that Joseph has been killed by a wild animal.

Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold into slavery to a wealthy landowner named Potiphar, where he uses his gift of prophecy to become Potiphar’s trusted servant. However, he is falsely accused of attempted rape by Potiphar's wife and is thrown into prison. While in prison, Joseph interprets the dreams of his fellow prisoners, which leads him to be recruited to interpret Pharaoh's dream.

Joseph's interpretation of Pharaoh's dream predicts seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, which leads Pharaoh to put Joseph in charge of managing the country's food supply. Joseph uses this position to save Egypt from the ensuing famine and becomes a powerful ruler in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s brothers are forced to come to Egypt to buy food during the famine, unaware that Joseph is the person in charge. After a series of tests, Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers, who are filled with remorse for their past actions. The movie ends with Joseph and his family being reunited and reconciled.

The film features an all-star voice cast, including Ben Affleck as Joseph, Mark Hamill as Judah, Jodi Benson as Asenath, and Steven Weber as Pharaoh. The music is composed by John Bucchino and Stephen Schwartz, with songs performed by artists such as Maureen McGovern and Michael W. Smith. Overall, Joseph: King of Dreams is a beautifully animated and emotionally powerful retelling of the classic Bible story.
