Jojo Rabbit, directed by Taika Waititi, is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film that centers around a ten-year-old German boy named Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) living during World War II. He is a young, fervent Nazi supporter, and his imaginary friend is a caricatured version of Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi himself).
Jojo's world changes when he discovers that his mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Initially, Jojo is horrified and wants to turn Elsa in to the authorities but eventually develops compassion and understanding towards her, realizing that the propaganda he's been fed about Jews is all lies.
Throughout the film, Jojo navigates his conflicting beliefs and emotions, ultimately learning the value of acceptance and love. The film also features an outstanding supporting cast, including Sam Rockwell as a disillusioned Nazi officer and Rebel Wilson as a propaganda teacher.
Jojo Rabbit garnered widespread critical acclaim upon its release, winning the People's Choice Award at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and earning six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Johansson's performance.
