Billy, a young boy living in the Australian outback, becomes friends with a baby kangaroo named Joey. One day, while playing in the bush, Joey is caught by poachers who plan to sell him to a zoo in Sydney. Billy is devastated and decides to rescue Joey.
Meanwhile, Linda, the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador, is visiting her father in Australia and becomes interested in the plight of the endangered Kangaroo species. She meets Billy and offers to help him in his mission to rescue Joey.
Together, Billy and Linda embark on a dangerous journey to Sydney, where they hope to find Joey and set him free. Along the way, they face many obstacles, including a group of poachers determined to stop them at all costs.
As they get closer to the city, Billy and Linda must use all their skills and resourcefulness to outwit the poachers and ensure Joey's safe passage back to the wild. Along the way, they learn important lessons about friendship, courage, and the importance of protecting the natural world.
