Jigoku, also known as The Sinners of Hell, is a Japanese horror film directed by Nobuo Nakagawa. The movie follows the story of a young theology student named Shiro Shimizu, who accidentally hits a pedestrian while driving in the night. Fearing the consequences, he flees the scene of the accident and continues to live his life as usual.
However, Shiro's guilt-ridden conscience starts to catch up with him as he begins to see visions of the deceased victim haunting him. At the same time, a strange and diabolical doppelgänger starts to appear, leading Shiro to a journey of inner turmoil and horror.
As he struggles to come to terms with his guilt and confront his fears, Shiro finds himself on a path leading to hell, both metaphorically and literally. His journey takes him to a village where the dead are punished and the sins of the living are exposed and judged.
Jigoku is known for its unconventional narrative structure and portrayal of the afterlife. The film is considered a landmark in Japanese horror cinema and has influenced many filmmakers since its release in 1960.
