The movie Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway follows the adventure of CIA agents Palmer (played by Daniel Tadesse) and Gagano (played by Guillermo Llansó) as they embark on a dangerous mission to destroy the Soviet Union. The story is set in a dystopian future and takes place in a virtual reality simulation. The central theme is the battle for control of the cyberspace, filled with various virtual reality versions of the real world and outrageous characters.
Gagano's role was to create a labyrinthine VR game world where they could enter and intercept “Soviet Union” data and harness its power back to the U.S. However, upon accessing the system, they are quickly trapped within a delirious and surreal maze of digital corridors and hidden agendas. Reality starts to unravel around them, and they begin to question their mission and the people they trusted. This turns out to be far more complex than they initially thought.
As Palmer and Gagano navigate the simulated world, they are forced to confront their deepest fears and internalized tensions, further complicating the mission. Along the way, they encounter curious characters such as the President of Ethiopia, a ninja archivist, an armed saxophonist, a robotic woman with a broken heart, and so on. Fights break out, allegiances keep shifting, and the line that separates what is real from what is not begins to blur.
Overall, the movie is a blend of genres that includes inter-dimensional intrigue, spy-fi, kung-fu, and Philip K. Dick-esque mind-melting weirdness, resulting in a truly unclassifiable piece of cinema that leaves the audience guessing until the very end.
