Jesse Stone and his friend, Captain Healy, find themselves in trouble when they get shot during a stake-out in Boston that was not authorized by their superiors. Both men are injured and barely survive the attack.
Meanwhile, back in Paradise, Jesse receives a cryptic letter that leads him to a woman named Mary, who is the mother of a child who was kidnapped several years ago. Although her son was declared dead, Mary believes that he may still be alive and hopes that Jesse will reopen the case and find him.
Jesse agrees to help Mary and begins investigating the old kidnapping case. As he delves deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit that reaches all the way to the highest levels of government.
Along the way, Jesse must also deal with his own personal demons, including his struggle with alcoholism and his complicated relationship with his ex-wife. Despite these challenges, he remains dedicated to solving the case and finding the missing child.
With the help of his colleagues in the Paradise Police Department, Jesse follows a trail of clues that leads him to an unexpected suspect. In the end, he is able to bring the kidnapper to justice and reunite Mary with her long-lost son.
