Jeremy Fink, a 12-year-old boy in New York City, receives a strange wooden box in the mail a month before his 13th birthday. The box is accompanied by a note from his father, who passed away five years prior. The note explains that the box contains the meaning of life and that Jeremy must find the four keys that will unlock it.
Jeremy and his best friend, Lizzy, embark on a quest to find the keys and unlock the box before Jeremy's birthday. Along the way, they encounter a number of interesting characters, including a psychic, a street performer, and a philosopher.
As they search for the keys, Jeremy and Lizzy also learn important lessons about life, friendship, and the importance of living in the present moment.
