Jawbreaker

Comedy  United States of America

Jawbreaker is a 1999 black comedy film directed by Darren Stein and starring Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, and Julie Benz. The film follows the story of Courtney Shayne (played by McGowan) and her friends, Julie Freeman (Gayheart) and Marcie Fox (Benz), who are known as the "Flawless Four" at Reagan High School.

On the morning of her 17th birthday, the girls decide to play a prank on their friend, Liz Purr (Charlotte Ayanna), by kidnapping her and placing a jawbreaker in her mouth. However, things go terribly wrong when Liz accidentally swallows the jawbreaker, choking to death in front of her horrified friends.

In a panic, Courtney convinces Julie and Marcie to cover up the accident and make it look like a kidnapping gone wrong. They hide Liz's body in the trunk of Courtney's car and set out to stage the scene of the crime. Along the way, they encounter Fern Mayo (Judy Greer), a shy and insecure student who they decide to make over into a popular girl in order to distract suspicion from themselves.

As the girls struggle to keep their secret, tensions rise and their friendship begins to fall apart. Courtney becomes increasingly ruthless and manipulative, while Julie begins to question their actions and Marcie becomes paranoid and unstable. Meanwhile, Fern realizes the truth about Liz's death and threatens to expose them.

The film is a dark satire on high school cliques, popularity, and the lengths people will go to fit in. It received mixed reviews at the time of its release but has since gained a cult following.
