Secrets Unearthed at Jamaica Inn

Adventure,Crime  United Kingdom

Jamaica Inn is a British period drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released in 1939. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier and stars Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara, and Robert Newton.

The story takes place in the early 19th century in coastal Cornwall, England. Mary Yellan (O'Hara) goes to live with her aunt Patience (Marie Ney) at Jamaica Inn, only to discover that it is a den of smugglers led by her uncle Joss Merlyn (Newton). The smugglers lure ships onto the rocky coast to plunder them, and Mary becomes caught up in their criminal activities.

Mary meets a local vicar, Francis Davey (Alistair Sim), who is investigating the shipwrecks. He enlists her help in gathering evidence against the smugglers, but the situation becomes more dangerous as Joss discovers their plans.

Eventually, Joss is killed in a battle with the authorities, and the smugglers are arrested. Mary and Francis fall in love and plan to start a new life together.

Jamaica Inn was Hitchcock's last film made in Britain before he moved to Hollywood. It received mixed reviews at the time of its release but has since become a cult classic. Critics have praised the film's atmospheric visuals and Laughton's menacing performance as Joss.
