In the movie Jack Reacher, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the suspect in custody is James Barr, a trained military sniper who has recently returned from Iraq. The murders he is accused of committing took place in broad daylight and in front of multiple witnesses, leaving no doubt as to his guilt.
However, when Barr is interrogated and offers up the note calling for Jack Reacher, the case quickly becomes more complicated. Reacher is a former military police officer who has gone off the grid and is difficult to track down. But once he hears the call for help, he sets out to solve the mystery of what really happened that day.
As Reacher gets closer to the truth, he discovers a web of corruption and cover-ups that goes all the way to the top of the military establishment. Along the way, he teams up with Barr's defense lawyer, Helen Rodin, and her young daughter, who have their own reasons for wanting to clear Barr's name.
The action-packed movie is based on the novel "One Shot" by Lee Child, and stars Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, along with Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, and Werner Herzog. It was released in 2012 and received mixed reviews from critics. Nonetheless, it was successful at the box office and has since spawned a sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
