I've Got to Sing a Torch Song follows the story of a struggling Broadway actress named Sally Day (Joan Blondell), who is desperate for a big break. However, her luck changes when she meets wealthy playboy Stingaree (Ricardo Cortez), who offers to help finance her show.

Sally soon finds herself torn between her growing feelings for Stingaree and her loyalty to her longtime boyfriend and fellow performer, Johnny Mack Brown (Johnnie Davis). As the show approaches opening night, tensions rise, and Sally must navigate the complex relationships and rivalries within the theater world.

In addition to the romantic drama, the film features a series of comedic blackout gags and musical numbers, including the iconic title song "I've Got to Sing a Torch Song." Hollywood celebrities of the time, including Tallulah Bankhead, James Cagney, and Mae West, make appearances in caricatured form.

Despite positive critical reviews, I've Got to Sing a Torch Song struggled at the box office, due in part to the ongoing economic struggles of the Great Depression. However, it remains a fascinating snapshot of the glamorous and tumultuous world of 1930s Broadway.
