The second part of the Ivan the Terrible epic biopic focuses on the political struggles and power plays that marked the reign of Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible.
As the movie opens, we see Ivan struggling to assert his authority over the Russian boyars, the powerful and wealthy aristocrats who traditionally held a great deal of power in the Russian court. Ivan is determined to establish a personal army, composed of loyal soldiers who will owe their allegiance to him alone, rather than to the boyars.
However, the boyars are not ready to give up their power so easily. They plot against Ivan, conspiring to assassinate him and seize control of the government.
Meanwhile, Ivan's relationship with his beloved wife Anastasia deepens and becomes more complex. Anastasia is supportive of Ivan's efforts to establish his authority, but she is also deeply conflicted about the violence and bloodshed that seem to accompany his reign.
Against this backdrop of political intrigue and personal drama, Eisenstein introduces new experimental techniques, most notably the use of realistic sound effects and music to create a tense and immersive atmosphere. The movie's climactic scene, in which Ivan uncovers the boyars' plot and confronts their leaders, is a tour-de-force of suspense and drama.
Ultimately, Ivan emerges victorious from this conflict, though at great personal cost. He is more resolute than ever in his determination to rule Russia with an iron fist, but he is also increasingly isolated and aware of the human toll of his actions. The stage is set for the third and final installment of the epic, which Eisenstein was never able to complete.
