As the movie begins, it is the 1920s and Murray (played by Joe Pesci) is a young man struggling to survive as a bootlegger during Prohibition. He has little ambition and no one to rely on except for his longtime friend Joe (played by Harvey Keitel). Joe is charming, slick, and always seems to know the right things to say to get them out of trouble. Murray idolizes Joe and sees him as the key to his success.
As they work their way up the criminal ladder, Joe becomes increasingly manipulative. He starts taking a cut of their profits without telling Murray, and he begins sleeping with Murray's wife. Yet, Murray remains blind to Joe's true nature, even when others try to warn him. He sees Joe as his best friend and closest confidante, and he cannot imagine life without him.
The movie is told through flashbacks as Murray reflects on his life and the choices he made. He talks about how much he owes to Joe, and how he emerged as a powerful figure in the criminal underworld with Joe by his side. However, as Murray grows older and wiser, he starts to see Joe for who he really is. He realizes that Joe has been using him all along and that he has been a fool to trust him so blindly.
As the movie reaches its climax, Murray is faced with a crisis that forces him to confront Joe.
