It Was a Faint Dream is a Japanese historical drama film set in Kyoto during the 13th century, when the Imperial court is dominated by the clergy. The story revolves around Shijo, a peasant girl who is sold to a powerful daima as a concubine.

Bored by her life in seclusion, Shijo starts an affair with State Councillor and the brother of a retired Emperor. However, she soon realizes that she is nothing more than a disposable plaything of the court and decides to leave her life as a concubine behind.

Shijo becomes a nun and wanders the country, searching for a deeper meaning in life and seeking solace for the pain and heartbreak that she has experienced. As she travels, she interacts with other characters who are also seeking spiritual enlightenment, including a monk who is struggling with his own desires.

Throughout the film, the audience is taken on a journey through Shijo's life, as she confronts the challenges of living as a woman in a male-dominated society, faces the consequences of her choices, and ultimately discovers her own inner strength.
