Sam is an Indian-American teenager who feels like an outsider at her predominantly white high school. She rejects her Indian identity and family traditions, desperate to fit in with her peers. However, her world is turned upside down when her former best friend, Maya, becomes possessed by a demonic spirit from Indian mythology.
As Maya's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and violent, Sam realizes that only she can take on the evil force. With the help of her grandmother, who is well-versed in Indian mythology, and her new friend, Ajay, Sam reluctantly begins to explore her heritage and powers.
As they delve deeper into the mythology, Sam discovers that the demon plaguing Maya is one of the most powerful and dangerous in Indian lore. Sam must overcome her own insecurities and reconnect with her culture to battle the demon and save Maya's life.
