Where to watch Ishtar Movie

Desert Discord: Singing Spies

Action,Adventure,Comedy  United States of America

Ishtar is a comedy film released in 1987, directed by Elaine May and starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as the two hapless lounge singers, Lyle Rogers and Chuck Clarke. The film received negative reviews and was a commercial flop, but has since gained a cult following.

The story begins with Lyle and Chuck performing their cheesy act in a New York City bar, but they struggle to find work and survive financially. When a mysterious woman named Shirra introduces herself and offers to book them for a gig in Morocco, the duo eagerly accepts, seeing it as a chance to make a name for themselves.

Once they arrive in Morocco, they find themselves caught up in a complex political situation between the Emir of Ishtar (played by Ian Richardson), the CIA, and rebel forces seeking to overthrow the regime. Lyle and Chuck's incompetence and bumbling ways somehow manage to get them involved in several dangerous situations, including accidentally killing a CIA agent and disguising themselves as Afghan guerrillas.

Meanwhile, Shirra (played by Isabelle Adjani) has her own agenda and is manipulating Lyle and Chuck for her own gain. As the situation becomes more complicated and dangerous, the two singers must try to save their own lives and navigate their way through the chaos.

Despite the film's critical and commercial failure, Ishtar is known for its tongue-in-cheek humor, catchy musical numbers, and the chemistry between Beatty and Hoffman. It has been described as a satire of the Hollywood studio system and its obsession with making big-budget movies that ultimately fail to connect with audiences.
