Irreconcilable Differences is a 1984 comedy-drama film directed by Charles Shyer. The film stars Ryan O'Neal, Shelley Long, and a young Drew Barrymore in her breakout role. It tells the story of Casey Brodsky (Barrymore), a child who sues her parents, Albert (O'Neal) and Lucy (Long), for divorce and emancipation.

The film is narrated by Casey, who reflects back on her childhood as a precocious and intellectually gifted little girl. As a child, she spends much of her time observing her parents' failed marriage, which is constantly strained by their competing careers as Hollywood screenwriters. Albert is an arrogant and selfish man who is obsessed with his work, while Lucy is a passive and emotionally distant woman who uses alcohol to cope with her unhappiness.

As Casey grows older, she becomes increasingly frustrated with her parents' neglect and indifference towards her. When Lucy and Albert announce their plans to split up, Casey decides to take matters into her own hands and sues her parents for divorce and emancipation. The trial becomes a media sensation, and Casey is thrust into the public spotlight as she navigates the complexities of the legal system.

Throughout the film, the story alternates between Casey's perspective in the present day and flashbacks to her childhood. As the trial progresses, Lucy and Albert are forced to confront the mistakes they made as parents and as a couple. In the end, Casey's lawsuit brings about a reconciliation between her parents, but also serves as a reminder of the irreconcilable differences that ultimately led to their divorce.
