Iron Monkey was released in 1993 and directed by Yuen Woo-ping. The film stars Donnie Yen as the physician, who is also a skilled martial artist, and Yu Rongguang as the masked Iron Monkey. The villainous Shaolin monk is played by James Wong.
The film is set during the Ming dynasty and focuses on the corruption and oppression of officials in a small Chinese village. The villagers are forced to pay excessive taxes and suffer at the hands of the corrupt officials.
Iron Monkey and his accomplices rob the officials, and the village considers him a hero. However, the Governor sends for the physician, Wong Kei-ying, to capture the bandit. Wong is accompanied by his young son, who is also a skilled martial artist.
Wong initially tries to capture Iron Monkey but eventually realizes that he is fighting for the same cause. The two join forces and take on the evil Shaolin monk, who is working with the corrupt officials to exploit the village.
Iron Monkey features impressive martial arts choreography and action sequences, which are hallmarks of Yuen Woo-ping's style. The film was a commercial success and has since gained a cult following.
