The film IO is a science-fiction drama that follows the story of a young scientist, Sam Walden, who is one of the few people left on Earth after a catastrophic event that wiped out all life on the planet. She lives alone in an isolated research facility in the American West, where she is trying to find a way to save the Earth's atmosphere using algae.
Meanwhile, on a distant space station, an astronaut named Micah has been working to build a shuttle that can take a group of people to a distant moon, Io, where humanity might be able to start anew. When the last shuttle to Io is scheduled to depart, Micah decides to make a final trip to Earth to try and find his father.
Sam and Micah meet, and despite their initial differences, they soon find themselves drawn to each other. As they work together to find a way to save the Earth, they must also navigate a world that has been left behind by humanity.
The film touches on themes of isolation, loss, love, and hope, as Sam and Micah struggle to come to terms with the reality of a dying world and their own place in it. The end is left open-ended, leaving it up to the audience to decide if humanity will survive or perish.
