The movie begins with a young boy named David, who suffers from recurring nightmares about an alien invasion. One night, he wakes up to see a UFO landing near his house. The next day, his father and mother act strange and David suspects that they have been taken over by the aliens.
At school, David's teacher, Mrs. McKeltch, also begins to act strangely and David witnesses her being taken over by the aliens as well. He confides in the school nurse, Linda Magnusson, who is skeptical at first but then joins forces with him to investigate.
They discover a underground complex where the aliens have set up a base. The aliens are revealed to be small, green creatures with bulbous heads and large eyes. They can control the minds of the people they capture and use them as their slaves.
David and Linda are captured and subjected to mind control, but they manage to resist and escape. They then team up with a group of U.S. Marines who are sent in to investigate the strange happenings in the town.
Together, they launch an attack on the alien base, battling the creatures and destroying their equipment. In the end, David wakes up from his nightmare, realizing that the events he experienced were just a dream. However, he is comforted by the fact that he was able to overcome his fears and stand up to his imaginary invaders.
