Intimacy is a 2001 British film directed by Patrice Chéreau and starring Mark Rylance and Kerry Fox. The film is based on a story by Hanif Kureishi, who also wrote the screenplay. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001, where it was awarded the Golden Lion.
The story follows Jay, a middle-aged former musician who now works as a bartender at a busy pub in London. He leads an isolated and lonely life, estranged from his wife and children. Every Wednesday afternoon, he engages in a sexual relationship with a woman he barely knows, identified only as "C" in the film's credits. Their encounters are passion-filled and intense, but they never speak about anything beyond the physical.
One day, Jay becomes curious about C's life outside of their weekly encounters. He follows her and discovers that she is a struggling actress with a young son and a difficult ex-husband. His realization that C has a life outside of their relationship leads to a rupture in their dynamic, as she begins to feel uncomfortable with the emotional distance between them. Jay struggles to reconcile his desire for physical intimacy with his fear of emotional vulnerability, leading him on a journey of self-reflection and growth.
Throughout the film, the two actors engage in graphic and unsimulated sex scenes, which attracted controversy and critical acclaim upon its release. Despite the explicit content, the film is less about sex than it is about the emotional complexities of human relationships. It explores themes of loneliness, intimacy, and the difficulty of connecting with one another in a world that often feels disconnected and anonymous.
