Pete and Ellie, a happily married couple, feel ready to start a family. However, Ellie is unable to conceive a child, and they begin to consider adoption. During an adoption fair, the couple meets a teenage girl named Lizzy, who has two younger siblings, Juan and Lita. After getting to know the children, Pete and Ellie decide to take a chance on fostering all three siblings.
Despite enthusiasm for the new additions to their family, Pete and Ellie quickly realize they are not equipped to parent three kids, especially with Lizzy being a spirited and hormonal teenager. They have to navigate through challenges and learn to adapt and adjust their perspectives towards the children to truly become a family. Meanwhile, Pete and Ellie's own relationship is tested as the stress of the foster care system takes a toll on them. The couple must work together to support their new family and overcome their own uncertainties about adoption.
Throughout the movie, Instant Family takes a heartwarming and comedic approach to the struggles that accompany the journey towards adoption for both the children and the adoptive parents. The movie also brings attention to the struggles of children in the foster care system and the importance of giving them a safe, loving home.
