Inserts is a dark comedy-drama film that was released in 1975. It was written and directed by John Byrum and starred Richard Dreyfuss, Jessica Harper, Bob Hoskins, and Veronica Cartwright. The film is set in the early 1930s during the transition from silent films to talkies.
The main character in the film is Boy Wonder, a once-great Hollywood film director who has fallen out of favor with the studio system and refuses to adapt to the changing times. He has become reclusive and confines himself to his decaying mansion where he spends his days making silent porn flicks with his girlfriend, Harlene.
However, Boy Wonder's world is turned upside down when his former leading lady, Cathy Cake, shows up at his doorstep. She is now a drug-addicted has-been who is desperate for work and needs Boy Wonder's help to make a comeback.
As the film progresses, we see Boy Wonder struggle with his own demons and try to come to terms with the changing times in Hollywood. He is forced to confront his own limitations as a filmmaker and his own morality as he becomes involved in Cathy's plan to escape her current situation.
Inserts received mixed reviews when it was released and was considered controversial due to its graphic content. However, it has since gained a cult following and is now regarded as a darkly comedic look at a time of great change in Hollywood.
