India Sweets and Spices is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Geeta Malik and released in 2021. The film follows the story of a young college freshman named Alia Kapur (Sophia Ali), who is torn between her modern American identity and her Indian heritage.
Alia returns home to New Jersey for the summer after her freshman year at college, and reconnects with her family and childhood friend, Varun (Rish Shah). To her surprise, she finds out her parents have been hiding an arranged marriage proposal from her, which leads her to question her own identity as a young Indian-American woman.
As Alia uncovers secrets about her family and community, she becomes more and more rebellious, challenging her parents' values and traditions. Along the way, she falls in love with Varun, and together they navigate the complexities of cultural identity and family expectations.
