In The Heights is a musical drama film directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the hit Broadway show of the same name by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film follows the story of Usnavi de la Vega (Anthony Ramos), a bodega owner in the vibrant and colourful neighbourhood of Washington Heights in New York City.
Usnavi dreams of leaving the bustling city and retiring to the Dominican Republic, where he can live a peaceful life. However, he is torn between his desire for tranquillity and his love for his customers and the community he has built over the years.
As the film progresses, Usnavi's dilemmas become more complicated when he meets Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), a young woman who dreams of becoming a fashion designer and moving to a better neighbourhood. Usnavi begins to consider staying in Washington Heights to pursue his own dreams with Vanessa by his side.
Other characters in the film include Nina (Leslie Grace), a college student who struggles with the pressure of being the first in her family to attend university, and her parents Kevin (Jimmy Smits) and Camila (Olga Merediz), who own a struggling cab company.
