The movie In the Heat of the Night is a classic crime drama that was released in 1967. The main character, Virgil Tibbs, is a highly skilled detective from Philadelphia who happens to be black. He is traveling through a small town in Mississippi when he is arrested for a murder he did not commit. When the local police chief realizes his mistake, he asks Tibbs to help solve the murder.
The town is deeply divided along racial lines, with a strong sense of segregation and racism. Tibbs faces hostility and prejudice from the locals, even as he works to uncover the truth about the killing. He works closely with the police chief, who is initially skeptical of Tibbs but comes to appreciate his intelligence and skill.
The investigation leads them to a wealthy white businessman, who turns out to be responsible for the murder. In the end, Tibbs is able to solve the crime and show the people of the town that he is a highly capable detective, despite their racism.
The movie was groundbreaking in its portrayal of a black protagonist who is every bit as intelligent and capable as his white counterparts. It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
